Waste Bans?

Save the Earth - Make it in your own backyard!

The Town of Middleborough and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection have teamed up to make it easy for residents to recycle more then 25% of their trash.  How?  It's simple.  The DEP has granted Middleborough 200 compost bins to sell to residents for the low price of $20.00.  The unit available is called the New Age Composter and is sold in stores for $59.95.  It is manufactured by the New Bedford based company, New England Plastics Corporation, out of 100 percent recycled plastic (mostly laundry detergent bottles from local recycling programs).  Anyone interested should call the Department of Public Works,  508-946-2481 to reserve a compost bin.
Composting is simply Nature's way of recycling.  Have you ever wondered what happens to the leaves that fall in a forest?  No one rakes them up and sets them out on the curb for collection.  Compost critters such as earthworms, bacteria, fungi, molds and insects eat the leaves and convert them into soil-like substance called humus or compost.  There are many beneficial uses for compost.  Like fertilizer, compost nourishes plants.  It also helps soik retain moisture, enables roots to grow and replenishes life to the soil.
The Town of Middleborough encourages backyard composting because it can dramatically reduce the amount of leaves, grass clippings, garden waste and kitchen scraps (vegetative matter only-no meat, fat or bones) going into landfills.  The Department of Public Works urges residents to take advantage of these high-quality, low-cost, rodent-resistant compost bins.  A compost bin keeps animals out, retains heat and moisture (which speeds up the composting process) and gives a tidy appearance (which makes neighbors happier).
