| | REDUCE MOSQUITO POPULATIONS
Mosquitoes will breed in any puddle or standing water that lasts for longer
than four days. Reduce mosquito numbers by taking the following steps:
- Dispose of or regularly empty metal cans, plastic containers, trashcans,
ceramic pots and other containers.
- Remove discarded tires. Tires are common mosquito breeding areas.
- Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left outside so
water will drain.
- Clean roof gutters and remove leaves and debris that may prevent drainage
of rainwater.
- Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
- Remove standing water from plastic coverings on swimming pools or
woodpiles.
- Do not allow water in birdbaths to stagnate-change the water every few
days.
- Keep swimming pools clean and properly chlorinated.
REDUCE EXPOSURE
-
Avoid outdoor activities at dawn and dusk - mosquitoes are
most active at these times.
-
If outdoors when mosquitoes are active, wear long-sleeved
shirts and long pants and use a mosquito repellent that contains DEET.
-
Take special care to cover up children's arms and legs and
use mosquito netting to cover baby carriages or playpens.
-
Fix holes in screens and make sure they are tightly
attached. Use bug guards provided with window-mounted air
conditioners.
